2019 Annual Report
The Nanaimo Seniors Services Network (NSSN) is a group of dedicated professionals and businesses, both private and non-profit who provide a wide variety of services and products for older adults in Nanaimo. Members of NSSN have the opportunity to network and to participate in events hosted by NSSN Annual Seniors Health and Wellness Fair.
Our mandate is to support each other and to find ways as a community to assist older adults to find the services they need. Our mission is to educate, inspire and share information during both our monthly network meetings and through our daily activities in our areas of expertise. Together the individual and corporate memberships of the NSSN bring a body of knowledge, services, support and growth to the seniors sector in Nanaimo.
As members of the NSSN we are consistently invited to tradeshows, conferences, webinars, and meetings that support the health and wellness of older adults in our community both locally and through our collaborations including those found at the Provincial levels. Our membership offers the opportunity for care providers, private businesses, government, social service agencies, and private care facilities to work together in harmony while sharing resources and services.
We proudly celebrate each other’s achievements and work together as a united front to support older adults in whatever capacity we can.
We are the Nanaimo Seniors Services Network.
Cathy Holmes, President
Unbelievable…another amazing year! It has been both an honour and a privilege to serve as your President in 2019 and I love working with all of you so much! As we welcome 2020, we are well on track for achieving our vision!
Both our membership and our community development grew substantially in 2019 and I know that as we move forward in the coming year, we will continue to be recognized as the leader in senior services in Nanaimo! And none of it could be possible without ALL OF YOU!!!
A huge shout out to all of the committees and the excellent work by our amazing teams! Thank you to the Events Committee, Communications Committee, and many thanks our newest team for our network format! Thank you Teresa Ostman and the Events committee for another great Health and Wellness Fair! Thanks to Isabella Ostman for doing such a great job of informing us of meetings, setting up the room and for keeping us all in the loop!
We look forward to our next Health and Wellness Fair scheduled for the fall of 2020! Stay tuned from more information as we get closer to the event time!
Our financial picture also grew substantially! A special thanks to Joan Ryan for her supportive role in so many aspects of the NSSN but particularly as Treasurer of our organization! It is with her direction regarding the Societies Act and her years of experience with the NSSN that we rely. We are grateful for all of her support and advice and we look forward to another year of serving the NSSN! Thanks so much Joan! We welcome our new treasurer in June of 2020! Welcome to Irene Morrison who who has been a long time member of our team!
I would also like to thank Susan Jarvis and Irene Morrison for allowing us to use the OAP space for our meetings. We all really appreciate your hospitality! Thanks also to BCOAP for their incredible afternoon tea at the Health and Wellness Fair! Everyone loved it and thanks to all of the volunteers! Great job everyone!!
To last year’s Board of Directors, thank you for your service! Thank you so much, Ken Greig, Sophia Ali, Mel Azcarraga, Barbara Grubb, Joan Ryan, and Lianne Ketcheson! We’ve only just begun! Welcome to our new board members: Judy Stephan, Teresa Ostman and Irene Morrison!
It is my belief that we are creating the gold standard for associations and networking groups in Nanaimo and together we can do amazing things! To all of our long time members, thank you for sticking with us! To our new members, welcome! We are truly honoured to have you involved and we welcome your insight! Please, join one of our committees…you’ll be bringing your incredible talents and we’re stronger by having you on board!
To everyone, I thank you for your trust, ideas, support and laughter!
It’s been a wonderful year!
I have truly enjoyed my role as president and chair of this amazing organization and I look forward to standing with you in 2020!

Secretary Report/ Lianne Ketcheson Even though I have only had a small part of filling temporarily in as the Secretary for the Nanaimo Seniors Service Network, I really enjoyed sharing ideas, meeting with the committee and hearing about their enthusiasm and commitment to this group. I first became a member I believe back in 2012 or so. I have seen many changes. To see this group grow has been inspiring. The dedication each member has to their field and the willingness to share and support others has been invaluable.
Meeting Committee/ Nahanni Ackroyd Our committee was struck in 2017 to create a new model for NSSN meetings, with a focus on networking. Isabella Ostman, Joyce Lange and Nahanni Ackroyd met and put together a networking meeting format that allows for fun, information and meaningful networking. Attendees are invited to network with the larger group and in smaller groups, as well as to follow up, with many opportunities to meet others. The format was designed to appeal to our not for profit and business partners. The format has been in place since early 2018 and will be reviewed again in fall 2018 to keep the format fresh and meaningful. Isabella Ostman has taken on this role for 2019/2020.
Thanks to all of our members, support teams
and to our community!
